Whalton Village Hall Committee


Minutes of a meeting held on September 14th 2004


Present: Sheila Lough (Vice Chairperson), David Adams (Treasurer), Joan Goddard (Secretary), Richard Potter, Elizabeth Silvester, Gill Waterworth, Jenny Stevenson, Martin Keegan, Stephen Trobe, Richard Sill, Stewart Murray, Nicky Blackett, Rosie Harvey and Barry Swan.

Apologies: Billy Grix (Chairman), Richard Grix, Alison Jackson and Fiona Ellis.

Sheila opened the meeting by extending the Committee’s sympathy to Stephen, and his family, on the recent death of his father. John Trobe had been a hard working and valued member of the Committee for many years, making a particular contribution to the establishment of the 100 Club.

Minutes:

The minutes of the August meeting were read and agreed as a correct record.


Matters arising:

None.


Treasurers Report:

David gave his report, a copy of which is on file. A donation of £1500 has been received from the Handley Trust and also the first installment of the grant from the Countryside Agency for the kitchen refurbishment.

Village Show:

This had been an enjoyable event which was well attended. The Industrial Classes were well supported and there were more people entrants in the Race than in previous years. David will supply a more detailed breakdown of class entries at a later date.

A net profit of £385 has been made, with £230 still outstanding for advertisements. The door made £136, the teas £110, the raffle £218, the race £11, the auction £120, the bar £50 and £148 in donations or unclaimed prize money.


Gardeners’ Question Time September 20th:

A lot of interest has been expressed in this event and some 230 tickets have been distributed. The door will open at 6pm and broadcasting will start at 6.45pm. There will be a bar, raffle and donations will be sought. A light tea will be provided for at the cast and crew by Gill and Jenny at 5.45pm. The Hall will be set up on Sunday.


Hall Refurbishment:

DEFRA have asked for clarification regarding roofing, wiring and the need for a Caretaker. This additional information has been provided and the application will be re-considered on September 22nd. Thanks yet again to Sue for all her work.


Bingo Night:

Stephen reported that this event made £644 gross. The net profit will be split between the Hall and the Toddler Group.

A big “thank you” was expressed to Jennifer.


Bonfire Night:

It may still be possible for this event to be held at the Hall. Alternatively the OSC building is available and the fireworks could be let off on the school football pitch if a safety barrier is erected. Plans will be firmed up at October’s meeting.


Jumble Sale September 18th:

Sheila asked for more helpers for this event, the proceeds of which will be split between the Village Hall and the Church.

Whalton in Bloom:

Sue reported that Whalton had received an Award of Merit at the recent Northumbria in Bloom Award ceremony. She read out the glowing comments of the judging panel who felt Whalton had a superb portfolio.


Lottery Party:

Sheila read out details of a circular from the Lottery Commission suggesting that organisations that had received grants held a party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its creation. We declined.

· Martin asked for minutes of recent the Village Hall Committee and Parish Council Meetings.
· Barry outlined the plight of the Cottage tenant who has not found alternative accommodation and his suggestion to support her was agreed.
· Barry also asked Committee members to support the Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday September 24th.

There being no further business the meeting ended at 8.45pm
